The Mic

With a name that says it all (Mike Starink), it is easy to see that The Mic is a STAR-with the-INK. Since the tender age of 10, Mike has been writing lyrics and had a strong love and respect for music. Growing up to the sounds of Motwn, Michael Jackson, Barry White, Rod Stewart, Queen, and Billy Joel to name a few; Mike’s influences are as vast as the universe itself. It wasn’t until the winter of 2001, that Mike discovered his skill as an MC. Starting out spitting lyrics on street corners with friends, the praise for his vocabulary and vocal delivery pushed him to chase a dream in Hip Hop. Unfortunately, with hundreds of other white rappers coming out the woodworks, and a year later movies like 8mile influencing even more to take on the delivery of verbal diarrhea, Mike had to look deeper into his career goals. After frantic and desperate searches for management and record labels with no results, Mike realized he had to raise the bar, and began putting himself in financial trouble to start doing things himself.. It took 3 years, 2 children, a divorce, the loss of one business partner, and the elimination of a bad drug and alcohol addiction before Mike finally reached one of many goals. With a little research, blood, sweat, tears, and the help of one young aspiring rapper named Castor Troy, Mike began producing his own music with quality most young up and coming artists don’t achieve until they get recording contracts; and this was without any schooling. And that was just the first 3 months. Since then he has gone on to learn the art of recording with the right mics and preamps, as well as the mix and mastering process to produce some top notch hip hop for only having 2 years experience. With the release of his new album due to hit in time to fill the stockings of friends and family, Mic has ambitions that this only the beginning, with aspirations to open a production company, recording studio, minor record label, and possibly radio station all within one home with his new business partners. And as he holds the fort in Champ City……….

Castor Troy

The middle child of a loving family, Troy’s style comes from the pain and experience of a hard knock life. At the mere age of 15, Troy met Mike at a friend’s house and began to write his own lyrics. His intense, pain-filled delivery caught his fellow mc’s attention with a surprisingly strong vocabulary. Though his grammar and verse structure needed work, with the help of his new business partner The Mic, they began collaborating on instrumentals downloaded from the internet. Slowly but surely Troy’s lyrical skills became impeccable and unique with such line as “I may be Canadian but I ain’t the peaceman”, and “I’m takin’ big steps like it burns my feet to step on concrete”. But though the influence of his partner invoked a maturity most kids his age shouldn’t even have, Troy was still in his teenaged, mistake making years. Losing him self to the wrong infatuations, drugs, and a bad alcohol problem; along with troubles in his family life and love. This all but slowed down the progression of not only his lyrical skill, but also the production and recording of The Mic and Castor Troy’s first demo. But despite the arguments and disappointments the pair had, Troy still gave his word to find himself, his swagger, and to come back to the microphone. Just after the recording of the first tracks for their next album, and their first photo shoot, Mike and Troy got into a huge argument over alcohol, and Troy’s current girlfriend. And Mike moving back to his home town 2 days later, the pair both had strong fears that it may be the end of their business venture. But days later, after a long talk about becoming a man in his own right, and taking on the business of the group while Mike handled the production, Troy made huge steps to get the duo sales of their cd, and promoting the name. Troy’s freestyle skills have greatly increased, and with Mike at the helm of the beat, the next album is already being planned as a double disc. With the first being all original material and the second being a mixtape of sampled oldies, Castor Troy and The Mic are prepared to take both Calgary and Edmonton, to whole new levels.
